Okay, I admit it. I am a magazine hoarder of epic proportions. I buy several magazines in any given month (sometimes several in a week) & I can never seem to throw them away - I'm sure you've all seen my piles upon piles of Vogue back issues that I've posted pictures of before. But it got me thinking a little bit when yesterday I nearly bought a magazine I haven't bought before and decided against it when I found out that all of the content was actually available on the website for free, and everyone loves free stuff, right? Well in that particular case, yes, but maybe not all the time.
I have the same dilemma with ebooks, sometimes they have books I want to read for free on Amazon but in the end nomatter how much I want to read it, nomatter how broke I am, a physical copy always wins out over digital. I like to hold a book, turn the pages. I'm one of those weird people that likes the smell of books.
That's probably why I always buy a paper copy I guess, I feel like I'm getting my money's worth, I'm getting something substantial. With magazines these days it seems like the prices are going up, but the magazines are getting thinner. Interesting articles & beautiful pictures are being scaled back in favour of adverts & sponsored features. Sadly there is no adblocker for a glossy monthly. The problem is, I want to buy the magazines because looking at a screen is never quite the same as exploring the real thing but I also don't like paying big prices for small, ad-heavy things.
In future I might lessen the buying a little and peruse the websites instead, although that being said, I'll still get my favourites because nothing quite beats relaxing on the sofa with a magazine and a cup of coffee and thankfully they don't seem to conform to the norm of an ad on every second page.
So these are some of my favourite mags (I definitely recommend them, to buy or to read online, whatever floats your boat!), what are your favourites?
I am exactly the same! I have almost 4 crates filled with old issues of Vogue, Elle, i-D, Lula and Love. Lula is by far my favourite though.
ReplyDeleteWhat really bothers me about Vogue is that that price practically goes up 10p every couple of months and yet the issues seem to be getting thinner and there are more ads/less beautiful editorials. At the same time though, I don't think I would ever buy any sort of e-book/magazine because what if my laptop crashes? What if I lose everything? Having a physical copy of something is almost always better.
Lula ans nylon are my favourites:)
ReplyDeletepaper paper paper. i poo on ebooks.
ReplyDeletei am a die hard nylon lover and i get lula whenever i can.
I'm jealous, all of te magazines you purchased are not available in my country (except for Nylon) and I want it all... :(
ReplyDeleteI'm super jealous of your collection! I really want to get my hands on Frankie, they look really lovely:)

I've wanted Dazed and Lula for such a long time, but it's so hard to convince people that I'm trying to subscribe for SANE reasons and that the price doesn't matter if I get to see piles of the magazine by my bed every night ;__;

Definitely paper over pixels, unless physical copies are unavailable where I am or anything like that. I'm a book lover like that, and also a fellow weirdo who loves to smell books. :)
ReplyDeleteI love magazines too! I love thick glossy pages, and I love flipping through them while drinking tea, and I love carrying them with me on the subway or bus! I love Frankie and also spoon and Fudge (both from Japan) and Vogue Girl Korea!
ReplyDelete(oops, hiccup with my comment before!) I love magazines too! I love thick glossy pages, and I love flipping through them while drinking tea, and I love carrying them with me on the subway or bus! I love Frankie and also spoon and Fudge (both from Japan) and Vogue Girl Korea!
ReplyDeleteOh, I hear ya! I'm a total magazine hoarder. I can't throw them out, they're too beautiful! I have years of back issues of design magazines - they're my pitfall.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever read Fallen? I found it when I was in Australia over the summer and it's lovely! Based on your favourites above, I think you'd really like it.
xo.
spoon & Fudge from Japan are my absolute favourite, but I'd love to get Frankie & Lula too, at least once.
ReplyDeleteSo with you! Especially on smelling, my stack is beside my bed (two crates here, three or four at my parents' house, oops) and these are all my favourites too... I'm making a magazine right now for my final project in j-school with some friends, and it's amazing how much work goes into these! Super fun though. It's been by far my favourite project of the past 4 years. (It's an oh-comely-ish wedding magazine for both bride & groom - whiskey tasting photoshoot tonight! Such hard "work"... well, actually. But after-!)
ReplyDeleteI'm one of those weird people that likes the smell of books. You're not alone, dear, you're definitely not. It's a really weird habit but I just love putting a book close to my face and smell it. Ooooooooooh.
ReplyDeleteOh, I love Frankie and Lula! Sadly they're not available in my country. Well they technically are, but they cost two times more expensive and I just can't be generous enough to pay eighteen pounds a month for Lula, no matter how I want it and how amazing it is. My favourite magazine would be National Geographic (the two magazine above, too, of course!) but I'm not sure if you'd like to know anyway. Bah.
Oh comely looks really interesting! Would love to check some issues out but then again where could I even get one in this isolated place...
frankie is my fave magazine!
ReplyDeleteI feel so similarly on the whole print vs. pixels dilemma. Nothing quite compares to turning the pages of an old book, or an old magazine, for that matter. I don't feel as worried about technology trumping print because I feel like there are so many more physical book and magazine lovers out there like us! Haha. Lula is definitely my favorite. You take beautiful photographs, by the way!
ReplyDeleteIt's very true, the prices are definitely going up but the pages are decreasing. I'm a magazine hoarder myself, and I love love love the smell of them, and the feeling of holding a new magazine in your hand on the way home from the newsagent. Hard copies will always be my choice, especially as I'm a writer myself.
ReplyDeleteMy collection of Frankie & Oh Comely is growing. My town doesn't stock Frankie, and neither does the city where my brother is at university, or the place my grandparents live. So I can only get a copy when I'm in London! But that makes it more special. I subscribe to Oh Comely as well, and might need to buy a copy of Lula soon...
ReplyDeleteAnyway, someone called me a magazine whore the other day. Compliment? I guess...
Oh Comely is one of my favorites! I loved picking it up for train rides while I was in the UK. Frankie is a great one too though!
ReplyDeletesuch similar taste! I have a propensity to like magazines from everywhere else but the usa. it's probably because I grew up with these and am so use to the same aesthetic. I am always so inspired by lula and gentlewomen. but I will say I do love myself the lucky magazine.. I don't really know why but I just do. and oh comely looks amazing, need to find an issue to check it out!
ReplyDeleteI simply adore Lula and Acne Paper and due to your posting I've come to like Frankie and Oh, Comely, as well. If you don't know Dansk and Zoo Magazine yet I urge you to give them a go. :)
